SWK 3030 - SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE III: GROUPS

This course is the third of four practice courses for the social work program and builds off of the first two courses. This course will focus on practice with groups and the group work process with emphasis on skill development to assess and design groups for effective interventions. This course is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary for effective group work and collaboration in social work practice settings. The course will examine both treatment and task groups. Exposure to the group process will be provided with focus on the significance of the process to goal development and achievement. Emphasis will be placed on groups in the context of their ecological framework. This course will provide students the skills to effectively assess, design, utilize evidenced based interventions for groups to ethically and effectively achieve their goals. This course will instruct students on how to lead various types of groups they will encounter in social work practice. Additionally, the course will emphasize the importance of understanding and respecting groups of diverse backgrounds. Objectives: A) Understand the principles and theories of group work in social work practice; B) Demonstrate the ability to form, lead, and facilitate groups effectively; C) Identify group dynamics, stages of development, and factors influencing group cohesion; D) Recognize the importance of cultural competence in group work; E) Apply ethical principles to group work practice and decision-making; F) Collaborate and communicate effectively within interdisciplinary teams; G) Evaluate group processes and interventions for effectiveness. Method of Instruction: Will be delivered through a combination of lectures, group discussions, case analyses, role-playing exercises, and guest speakers. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in simulated settings. Method of Evaluation: Group Facilitation Project (40 pts); Self-Help Group Attendance (20 pts); Participation and Attendance (20 pts); Quizzes (4 quizzes x 10 pts each).

Prerequisite(s): SWK 1010  and SWK 3010  and SWK 3020 .
