SWK 3020 - SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE II: CHILDREN AND FAMILIES

This course is the second of four practice courses for the social work program and builds off of the first course. This course will focus on practice with children and families with emphasis on identification of family needs, support and resource identification, strengths, and capabilities. This course extends the fundamental knowledge and competencies obtained in Social Work Practice I. Its primary emphasis is on evaluating families, pinpointing their strengths, requirements, support systems, available resources, and capabilities. By engaging in a blend of theoretical examination, real-world case studies, role-playing exercises, and hands-on experience, students will cultivate the capacity to appraise clients’ demands, positive attributes, and obstacles, and to craft and put into action successful interventions aimed at enhancing client welfare and advancing social justice. Throughout the course, ethical contemplations and cultural proficiency will be interwoven. Objectives: A) Understand key concepts when working with families and family systems; B) Apply developmental theories that provide framework to children and families across the lifespan; C) Demonstrate effective assessment of families focusing on strengths; D) Identify and analyze individual and systemic barriers affecting the family system; E) Develop and implement appropriate intervention plans tailored to the needs of the individuals and families; F) Apply evidence-based practices and theories to social work interventions; G) Recognize the importance of cultural competence and diversity in assessment and intervention; H) Demonstrate ethical decision-making and professional boundaries; I) Utilize effective communication and active listening skills in social work practice; J) Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make necessary adjustments. Method of Instruction: Will be delivered through a combination of lectures, group discussions, case analyses, role-playing exercises, and guest speakers. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge and skills in simulated settings. Method of Evaluation: Assessment Assignment (20 pts.); Family Interview (50 pts); Ethical Dilemma Analysis (15 pts): Participation and Attendance (20 pts).
