SWK 3010 - SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE I: INDIVIDUALS credits: 3.0 This course is the first of four practice courses for the social work program. This course will focus on practice with individuals such as relationship skills, assessment, and individual interventions. This course focuses on social work practice specific to working with individuals. It will provide students the knowledge and skills to engage in appropriate working relationships with individuals; assessing individual needs and resources; identification of appropriate and relevant, evidenced based, interventions to meet individual needs. Effective individual practice focusing on client strengths and resources from an ecological perspective. Emphasis on cultural competence when working with individuals of diverse backgrounds. Objectives: A) Demonstrate active listening skills and empathetic communication; B) Apply theoretical frameworks to individual needs and resources; C) Develop and maintain rapport with clients from diverse backgrounds; D) Demonstrate an ability to assess individual needs; E) Recognize individual strengths and resources; F) Assess ecological factors that impact individual needs and motivation for change; G) Demonstrate ethical decision-making and professional boundaries; H) Evaluate the effectiveness of interventions and make necessary adjustments. Method of Instruction: The course content will be delivered through lectures, group discussions, guest speakers, videos, role playing, and additional interactive activities. Students will engage in experiential learning exercises to apply theoretical concepts. Method of Evaluation: Participation and Attendance (20 pts), Video Interview (50 pts.), Assessment and Planning (25 pts), and Reflection paper (10 pts).
