SWK 1010 - INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL WORK credits: 3.0 An introduction to the field of social work that will provide students an overview of generalist social work practice. Students will be exposed to what opportunities are available in social work while gaining an understanding of the historical and theoretical components of social work. This course is designed to provide students an overview of the generalist social work practice. This course examines the historical roots of social work; code of ethics; current issues in the field; theories relevant to the field of social work; planned change process; issues related to social justice; importance of cultural competence when working with diverse client groups; and explores employment opportunities in the field. Objectives: A) Understand the historical development and evolution of the social work profession; B) Identify the values, ethics, and principles that guide social work practice; C) Explore the roles and functions of social workers in diverse settings; D) Gain an understanding of various social work practice areas and specializations; E) Recognize the significance of cultural competence and diversity in social work practice; F) Reflect on personal values and their alignment with social work values. Method of Instruction: The course content will be delivered through lectures, group discussions, case analyses, guest speakers, field visits to social service agencies, and interactive activities. Students will engage in experiential learning exercises to apply theoretical concepts. Method of Evaluation: 1. Reflection Journal (12 pts): Weekly journal entries (12) that reflect upon class content, personal values, and reflecting on class content, field experiences, and personal values. 2. Case Study Analysis (20 pts): Students will be provided a case study to assess and analyze client needs, identify appropriate interventions. analyze a social work case study, assessing client needs and recommending appropriate interventions based on the values and ethics of the profession. 3. Group Presentation (20 pts): Students will work in groups researching a social justice issue, what contributes to the issue, what area of social work practice would be most appropriate to respond, and what types of interventions could be utilized. 4. Final Exam (20 pts): A final exam covering course content from the term. 5. Participation and Attendance (20 pts): Active engagement in class discussions, group activities, and attendance.
