FSH 3500 - FUTURE OF FASHION MERCHANDISING: SUSTAINABILITY credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: MER 3500 Crosslisted/Same As (2): MGT 3500 FSH-MER-MGT 3500 . The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest consumer industries, and the source of over 10% of the world’s carbon emissions. Will look at the growing importance of sustainability for the fashion industry, with topics including resource use, environmental issues, business practices, and the impact of trends such as fast fashion and consumer preferences. It will also examine the economic implications of sustainability, and help prepare students for a growing social responsibility issue for leadership positions in fashion merchandising. Objectives: A) To describe key sustainability issues facing the current fashion industry; B) Analyze issues such as resource use, environmental impact and consumption patterns in fashion merchandising; C) To explain the industry best practices towards sustainability for the fashion industry; D) Create sustainability strategies and apply them in fashion case examples. Method of Instruction: Lectures and class discussion, guest speakers, assigned readings and cases, field trips, and in-the-field hands on experiences / project based learning. Method of Evaluation: Assignments: Case studies, 30%; Exams / Quizzes, 20%; Group Facilitator, 20%; and Experiential Learning Project / Portfolio, 30%.
