CSD 3505 - AUDITORY PATHOLOGIES

credits: 3.0
Will familiarize students with the various pathologies which affect the auditory and vestibular systems. Will learn advanced techniques in integration and interpretation of various diagnostic tests as well as their treatment and intervention strategies. Will gain practical application experience of acquired information through the use of case studies. Objectives: A) Utilize the case history as the foundation of the differential diagnosis process; B) Demonstrate the ability to ask appropriate, salient, and critical follow up questions based on the patient responses to general case history questions; C) Identify various auditory pathologies and discuss their incidence and prevalence; D) Correctly perform an audiologic assessment using evidence based practice and established protocols; E) Integrate audiometric and other acquired data in order to identify the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss; F) Integrate audiometric and other acquired data in order to arrive at a working diagnosis of the underlying pathology; G) Compare the findings common to various audiologic pathologies; H) Extract a working diagnosis based upon audiometric data; I) Demonstrate knowledge of “clinical thinking” by choosing an appropriate test battery based upon the following factors: Patient’s primary complaint, Case history, and Existing test data; J) Explain the concept of Clinical Decision Analysis (CDA) and engage in CDA at a rudimentary-intermediate level. Method of Instruction: Lectures, classroom demonstrations, multimedia, case studies, and assigned readings. Method of Evaluation: Given a total of four objective examinations, of equal weight. The final examination will be cumulative in that the students will engage in practical application of acquired knowledge by interpreting case studies with which they are presented. Students will also work in groups to create a differential diagnosis reference spreadsheet. Each examination will constitute 20% of the final grade and the differential diagnosis group project will constitute the remaining 20% of the final grade. Participation and attendance will not directly constitute any part of the grade, however, students who wish to perform well on examinations and, ultimately in the course, are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures.
