CSD 2700 - INTRODUCTION TO AUDIOLOGY

An introduction to the fundamentals of audiologic diagnostic assessment. Students will learn the basic principles of assessment as well as information on utilization and application of the cross-check principle. Will cover topics including the utilization of pure tone audiology, speech threshold and word discrimination ability to assess functional hearing acuity. Students will also learn basic auditory pathologies and how to read and interpret audiometric test results. Students in this course will explore audiologic assessment through lecture, discussion, multimedia, and clinical demonstrations. Objectives: A) Describe the origins and history of the profession of Audiology; B) Explain the difference between incidence and prevalence; C) Identify the basic types of auditory pathologies and discuss their incidence and prevalence; D) Correctly perform an audiologic screening according to established protocols; E) Begin integrating audiometric data in order to identify the type, degree, and configuration of hearing loss; F) Differentiate between sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing losses; G) Identify, describe, and differentiate between disorders of the outer ear which fall within the scope of practice of Audiology; H) Identify, describe, and differentiate between disorders of the middle ear which fall within the scope of practice of Audiology; I) Identify, describe, and differentiate between disorders of the inner ear which fall within the scope of practice of Audiology; J) List the nine referral criteria established by the Food and Drug Administration. Method of Instruction: Lectures, clinical demonstrations, multimedia, and assigned readings. Method of Evaluation: Given a total of four objective examinations, of equal weight and one practical examination. The practical examination will be given during finals week. Participation and attendance will not directly constitute any part of the grade, however, students who wish to perform well on examinations and, ultimately in the course, are strongly encouraged to attend all lectures.
