FOR 4350L - FORENSIC CHEMISTRY LAB

CHE 4350L  and FOR 4350 is a study of chemistry as it pertains to law. Focus is on the many lab techniques of forensic science, such as drug analysis, toxicology, trace analysis, arson analysis, and DNA/serology.  This course will focus on the analysis and identification of drugs, accelerants, explosives, inks, and paints.   Students will complete practical exercises utilizing spectroscopy, chromatography and mass spectrometry that reflect common practice in forensic science laboratories. Objectives: A) Explain proper methods of forensic chemical evidence collection; B) Explain the various types of forensic instruments available to chemists; C) Determine the ID of drugs in the body by HPLC, GC-MS; D) Determine the ID of accelerants in arson cases by GC-MS; E) Analyze the composition of Inks and Paints; F) Analyze Fibers and Hair by Micro spectrophotometric examination. Method of Instruction: A combination of Pre-lab lectures, Pre-lab Videos, and in lab instruction. Method of Evaluation: Lab Notebooks 30%, Lab Reports 50%, Lab Presentation 10%, and Lab Final 10%. Lab Fee: $75.00.

Prerequisite(s): CHE 2010L  and BIO 3042L  or CHE 2010L  and BIO 3110L .
