CHE 4350 and FOR 4350 is a study of chemistry as it pertains to law. Focus is on the many facets of forensic science, such as drug analysis, toxicology, trace analysis, arson analysis, and DNA/serology. This course will focus on the analysis and identification of drugs, accelerants, explosives, inks, and paints. Special topics of the students’ choosing will also be included in the form of student presentations. A separate laboratory section will also be offered in which students will complete practical exercises utilizing spectroscopy, chromatography and mass spectrometry that reflect common practice in forensic science laboratories. Objectives: A) Explain proper methods of forensic chemical evidence collection; B) Explain the various types of forensic instruments available to chemists; C) Identify various methods to determine the ID of drugs in the body; D) Determine the ID of accelerants in arson cases; E) Analyze the composition of Inks and Paints. Method of Instruction: A combination of lecture, small group discussion, and in-class problems. Method of Evaluation: Four Exams 50%, Homework 30%, and Final 20%.
