NSG 3210 - PROFESSIONAL SEMINAR


credits: 3.0
A seminar course in which the student continues in the transition from student to professional. Current issues and structures in nursing are examined in the context of their historical background. The influence of political, economic and social trends on the practice of nursing are explored. All students are expected to be active seminar participants and to continue leadership development. Objectives: A) Identify relevant issues within the health care field which have current and potential implications for the practice of the profession of nursing; B) Identify the relationship of organizational structure to performance, power and conflict; C) Utilize professional assertiveness in providing leadership to influence health care issues; D) Articulate knowledge of the relationship between the ethical and legal dimensions and nursing education and practice; E) Utilize relevant information from the literature in the formulation and justification of professional positions on health issues; F) Articulate a position on issues of concern to nursing within the context of a group, both as a leader and as a participant; G) Demonstrate the ability to interpret the goals of the organization of professional nurses; H) Discuss issues in nursing education, research and scholarship that affect the nursing practice; I) Identify changes in our world society that impact health care delivery; J) Demonstrate an understanding of the political process within our government. Method of Instruction: Discussion, debates, lecture, guest speakers and field trips. Method of Evaluation: Debates, political project, quizzes, portfolio.

Prerequisite(s): NSG 2640 - FOUNDATIONS OF QUALITY ANDSAFETY FOR NURSING PRACTICE  and NSG 3110 - NURSING CARE OF ADULT CLIENTS  (or) NSG 3000 - PERSPECTIVES OF PROFESSIONAL NURSINCARE  and NSG 3110 - NURSING CARE OF ADULT CLIENTS
