NSG 2640 - FOUNDATIONS OF QUALITY ANDSAFETY FOR NURSING PRACTICE credits: 4.0 This is theory and practicum course focuses on students acquiring foundational competencies basic to the practice of safe, quality nursing care. Through the use of the nursing process, the student applies basic communication skills in establishing a nurse-client relationship and provides care for clients in the long-term and acute health care environment. Objectives: Student Learning Outcomes: A) Implement safe, quality nursing interventions in the maintenance and restoration of client health in the acute and long term care environment; B) Utilize scientific principles from nursing and related fields when implementing the nursing process for selected clients in the acute and/or long term care environment; C) Utilize principles of communication effectively to interact with clients, families and members of the health care team within the acute and/or long term care environment; D) Assume responsibility and accountability for individual nursing practice and professional behaviors while demonstrating; E) Competent, safe, quality nursing care within the acute and/or long term care environment; F) Apply evidence- informed practice in the care of clients and families in the acute and/or long term care environment; G) Recognize the various levels of authority and responsibility among health care providers within a specific health care environment as it related to the student role; H) Exhibit a culture of respect for the diversity of persons encountered in the health care and learning environments. Method of Instruction: Teaching/learning strategies may include: interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration, self-directed learning modules, written assignments, technological assisted learning with course base management system (CANVAS), campus laboratory practice, supervised clinical practice, and/or simulation. Method of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated on their overall performance, in both the laboratory and clinical setting. Students must have a passing quiz/exam average to pass this course. All other assignments will not be calculated into the grade unless the student is passing all quizzes/exams at the end of the term. Grading for this course will be based on the following: Exams 35%, Quizzes 10%, Midterm Exam 15%, Final Exam 15%, Medication Adherence Paper 15%, Concept Maps (one for ltc, one for acute care) 5%, ATI 5%, Service Learning Pass/Fail, Learning Competency evaluations Pass/Fail, Clinical Pass/Fail, ATI Medication Templates Pass/Fail, Simulation Pass/Fail, Weekly logs/Assignments Pass/Fail.
