NSG 3111 - NURSING CARE OF WOMEN’S HEALTHCLIENTS

A clinical nursing course that uses the nursing process to study developmental discontinuity in the individual client. The perinatal and newborn cycle are studied as developmental discontinuities. Classroom and clinical experiences will continue to expand knowledge and skills necessary for care of individual clients as systems on the health-illness continuum. Objectives: A) Apply appropriate theories and concepts from nursing and related fields as a basis for nursing practice relevant to the self and the individual client system experiencing a developmental discontinuity; B) Examine the position on the health-illness continuum of individual clients in the perinatal period; C) Identify the impact of internal and external dis- continuities which impinge upon the individual client system in meeting health care needs; D) Utilize the nursing process for the purpose of preserving, restoring, and-or maintaining of optimum health related to the perinatal and newborn systems; E) Apply evidenced based practice relevant to the care of the individual client system, as a part of the nursing process; F) Employ the leadership process within the framework of the nurse-client relationship; G) Identify needed changes in the health care of the client through coordination with colleagues; H) Demonstrate ethical and legal accountability for the nursing care of individual clients; I) Demonstrate proficiency in skills necessary to assess and provide care for clients in the perinatal period; J) Participate in a leadership role functioning as a supervised team leader in the clinical setting. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and simulation lab-clinical practice. Method of Evaluation: Exam one 27%, Exam two 27%, Final Exam 36%, OB Quizzes (In class)-Assignments 5%, Case Study Presentation 5%, Medication Test P-F, Logs P-F, Clinical (skills tests, assignments, etc.) P-F, Nursing Process P-F and Service Learning P-F.

Prerequisite(s): NSG 2640 - FOUNDATIONS OF QUALITY ANDSAFETY FOR NURSING PRACTICE  and NSG 3115 - HEALTH ASSESSMENT OF CLIENTS ACROSSTHE LIFE SPAN
