FIN 4200 - CASE PROBLEMS IN FINANCIALMANAGEMENT AND PLANNING


credits: 3.0
Is a one-semester course that focuses on the nature of problems and decision-making in financial management and financial planning. Will analyze real-world applications addressing the financial decisions that managers face in business and financial planners face with clients. Students develop expertise in applying financial principles to the analysis of complex client issues and business problems. By using the case study approach to find solutions to problems that contain complex variables, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of critical financial concepts. Cases include data that will be analyzed using excel spreadsheets and financial planning software. Objectives: A) Identify and successfully use the appropriate financial tool(s), including formulas, valuation methods, and models in analyzing data contained in case studies; B) Analyze complex financial variables and their relationships; C) Critically analyze the limitations of theory as it applies to decision making in practice; D) Identify and describe the various ways of raising capital and how they affect the firm’s cost of capital; E) Communicate effectively in writing and during presentations; F) Develop the ability to work in teams; G) Apply a comprehensive understanding of the content found within the financial planning curriculum and effectively organize and integrate this information in the formulation of a financial plan; H) Effectively communicate the financial plan, both orally and in writing, including information based on research, peer, colleague or simulated client interaction and-or results emanating from synthesis of material; I) Collect all necessary and relevant qualitative and quantitative information required to develop a financial plan; J) Analyze personal financial situations, evaluating clients’ objectives, needs, and values to develop an appropriate strategy within the financial plan; K) Identify using logic and reasoning the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches to a specific problem; L) Evaluate the impact of economic, political, and regulatory issues with regard to the financial plan; M) Apply the CFP Board Financial Planning Practice Standards to the financial planning process. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration, and Collaboration. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes 20%; Case Presentations 20%; Mid-Term 20%; Final Exam 20%; Class Attendance and Participation 20%. Class attendance, and active participation are equally included in the grade weighting. Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.

Prerequisite(s): ECO 3041 - INTERMEDIATE MACROECONOMICS  and FIN 3010 - FINANCIAL MANAGEMENT  and FIN 3250 - INVESTMENT ANALYSIS AND CONCEPTS  and FIN 3300 - FINANCIAL MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS
