FIN 3300 - FINANCIAL MARKETS AND INSTITUTIONS credits: 3.0 This course covers why financial markets exist, how financial institutions serve them, and the services financial institutions offer. Financial markets include debt, equity and derivative markets. Financial institutions include commercial banks and nonbank operations. Management, performance, and regulation of these institutions is discussed. Will examine the Federal Reserve System’s impact on money, financial markets and financial institutions. A study ensues from financial theory to practice and includes financial trends. Objectives: A) Summarize the role of financial markets and institutions; B) Define and describe debt security markets, equity markets and derivative markets; C) Explain market offerings including private and public equity; D) Discuss market transactions and how they are executed; E) Assess the impact of monetary policy on financial markets; F) Describe regulation for financial institutions and markets; G) Analyze risk in financial markets and at financial institutions; H) Apply risk management tools available for market participants; I) Explain the difference between commercial banking and nonbank operations. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration, Collaboration (in class interaction with peers and instructor). Method of Evaluation: Quizzes 20%; Mid-Term Exam 20%; Final Exam 20%; Weekly Assignments 20%; Class Attendance and Participation 20%. Class attendance and active participation are equally included in the grade weighting.
