CHE 3300L - MEDICINAL CHEMISTRY LAB credits: 1.0 Crosslisted/Same As: BIO 3300L BIO 3300L -CHE 3300L Students will study of the synthesis, extraction, and analysis of medicinal compounds. Topics in the course will include the synthesis of analgesics and antibiotics, extraction of natural plant based drugs and pharmacophores as well as the analysis of biological enzymes and OTC medications. Objectives: A) Developed protocols to extract active ingredients and medications from plants and OTC medications; B) Designed and completed the synthesis of common over the counter drugs; C) Identified safety hazards involved in performing organic syntheses; D) Performed qualitative analysis of organic compounds. Method of Instruction: The lab will include a 30-45 minute prelab with two hours on laboratory experimentation. This will include one-on-one instruction as students individually work on experiments. Method of Evaluation: Prelab Evaluation Quizzes: 20%, Laboratory Reports: 65%, and Formal Lab Report and Presentation: 15%. Prerequisite(s): BIO 1020L - GENERAL BIOLOGY LABORATORY I and CHE 2010 - ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I Co-Requisite(s): MUST BE TAKEN WITH CHE 3300 Lecture.
