MAT 1092 - PRE-CALCULUS II credits: 4.0 This course is the second in a two term sequence is designed to prepare students for Calculus courses. Topics will include angles and their measures, trigonometric and inverse trigonometric functions, triangle trigonometry and trigonometric identities. Course includes computer lab. The computer lab exercises are designed to help students master the material and increase their facility at mathematical calculations and problem solving. Lab assignments will often be done in groups to provide additional support to the students as they work on mastering the material. Objectives: Students who successfully complete this class should: be able to use both degree and radian measures for angles; be able to use and apply the three definitions of trigonometric functions, specifically the right triangle definition, the definition for a general angle and the circular function definition; be able to graph the six basic trigonometric functions and more complicated functions built with these six both with and without computer assistance; be able to use and apply the Law of Sines and the Law of Cosines; recall standard trigonometric identities and use these identities to prove more complicated identities and to simplify trigonometric expressions; solve trigonometric equations both graphically and algebraically; continue developing their ability to use technology to analyze and communicate mathematics. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion and group computer based labs. Method of Evaluation: In class quizzes and tests, group computer assignments and a comprehensive final exam.
Prerequisite(s): AN ADEQUATE SCORE ON THE DEPARTMENTAL PLACEMENT TEST and either of MAT 1000 - ESSENTIAL MATH SKILLS I (or) MAT 1001 - ESSENTIAL MATH SKILLS II (or) MAT 1030 - COLLEGE ALGEBRA (or) MAT 1090 - PRECALCULUS (or) MAT 1930 - IMMERSION COLLEGE ALGEBRA (or) MAT 2010 - CALCULUS I (or) MAT 2020 - CALCULUS II Co-Requisite(s): MUST BE TAKEN WITH A MAT 1092L LAB.
