EDU 3331 - CUR DES CHLDHD SP ED:MATH, SCI, STAND ART credits: 3.0 Pre-service teacher candidates apply learning theories and evidence-based methods to design, organize, deliver, and adapt instruction for students with disabilities in grades one through six. Emphasis is placed on designing effective instructional programs and accommodating students with disabilities. Candidates use New York State’s Learning and Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Mathematics to design alternative instructional strategies and techniques. Additionally, candidates use research and writing process skills (e.g., prewriting, writing, revising, and editing) to develop written individual educational plans (IEPs), instructional goals and objectives, lesson plans, and learning segments. Objectives: A) Discuss fundamental issues in using various curricula and methods of instruction with students with disabilities in grades one through six; B) Examine ways to organize curriculum and instructional approaches in relationship to the Common Core State Standards; C) Identify skills and competencies needed to organize effective instructional programs for students with disabilities in grades one through six; D) Examine evidence-based methods for designing, delivering, and adapting academic instruction; E) Analyze alternative instructional and organizational strategies; F) Examine co-teaching models of instruction; G) Apply principles of curriculum design to create instructional plans and learning segments. Method of Instruction: Lecture, class discussion, group collaborations, and student presentations. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation and Discussion, 10%; Essays and Critiques, 10%; Lesson Plans, Learning Segments, Individualized Educational Plans (IEPs), and Other Related Assignments, 20%; Comprehensive Portfolio and Presentation, 35%; Midterm Examination,10%; Final Examination, 15%. Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.
