EDU 2222 - CREATING INCLUSIVE LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS credits: 3.0 Pre-service teacher candidates examine principles of behavior and classroom management of students with disabilities. Emphasis is placed on instructional, whole-group, and individual intervention techniques. The course teaches candidates how to design positive behavioral supports, functional behavioral assessments, social skills training, and proactive, problem-solving techniques for all learners. Additionally, candidates identify causes of student misbehavior, explore communication functions and environmental factors that influence student behavior in the classroom, and learn how to communicate and collaborate with staff, family, and community partners to support all students. Objectives: A) Apply theoretical foundations of classroom management to strategies and techniques designed to help manage challenging classroom behaviors of students with disabilities; B) Examine positive behavioral support, applied behavior analysis, functional behavior assessment, cognitive behavior management, social skills training, cultural influences on behavior, and current legal policy issues of all learners, including students with autism; C) Discuss and critique several proven models of classroom management; D) Analyze the relationship between behavior and environmental events; E) Construct and implement general and individual classroom management strategies; F) Identify the causes of student misbehavior and develop proactive, problem-solving approaches that can be used with all learners; G) Examine collaborative partnerships and identify communication roadblocks among educational stakeholders. Method of Instruction: Lecture, class discussions, group collaborations, and student presentations. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation and Discussion, 10%; Written Assignments, 40%; Student Presentations, 15%; Midterm Examination, 15%; Final Examination, 20%.
