SSC 4590 - APPLIED SENIOR PROJECT IN SOCIAL JUSTICE

credits: 3.0
This class will serve as an applied senior project in the Social Justice minor, with a focus on applying the skills from the minor to developing an intervention or research project that works to address historical injustices in the Elmira community.  Each student in this class will work with one faculty member to design and implement a research project or intervention that examines and works to enact social change in the Elmira community or another community directly connected to the student.  These projects could include: research on the history of marginalized groups in Elmira, designing a program for education or resource intervention in Elmira, or creating a grant proposal for a new social program in or around Elmira. Objectives: A) Apply the techniques and theories from other classes to a nuanced understanding of how to make an impact on equity in one’s community; B) Directly address  the processes of justice and equity; C) Use individual interests in specific social issues in order to create a product for social change; D) Develop a portfolio of applied research in social justice for use in future careers. Method of Instruction: Independent work by students, guided by one-on-one meetings with the instructor. The primary means of instruction will be through the application of the scientific method to a problem or question chosen by the student in consultation with the faculty member to produce a project and documentation of that project sufficient to provide evidence of active work toward social change.  This could be a research report of a particular length (e.g. 20 pages) or a certain number of hours of work (e.g. 50 over the term) depending on the student’s area of interest and methodology. Method of Evaluation: Grading will be based on the faculty evaluation of the research paper.

Prerequisite(s): Senior Standing and SWK 2010 .
