SWK 2010 - INTRODUCTION TO SOCIAL JUSTICE

This course will provide students an introduction to what social justice is, what leades to inequality, the impact of inequality on human potential, and the importance of advocacy.  This course is designed to provide students a basic understanding of what social justice is, how to assess inequality, the impact of inequality on human potential, and the importance of advocacy for vulnerable and diverse populations. Students will be exposed to both historical and contemporary social justice issues. Students will engage in analysis of historical and contemporary interventions, policies, and proposals meant to alleviate social justice. Objectives: A) Understand how prejudice and discrimination impact individuals and society; B) Understand theories and concepts of social justice; C) Understand the role of advocacy to improve conditions for vulnerable groups; D) Assess the effectiveness of interventions, policies, and proposals designed to promote social justice; E) Explore how their own personal values and biases may influence their work with vulnerable and diverse populations; F) Identify societal factors that contribute to social inequality; G) Apply ethical and culturally competent approaches when working with diverse populations. Method of Instruction: The course will include lectures, group discussions, case studies, field trips, and guest speakers. Students will actively engage in organization and development activities with campus partners. Method of Evaluation: 1. Participation and Attendance (20 pts): Active engagement in class discussions, group activities, and attendance. 2. Weekly reflection  (12 x 5 pts each=60 pts.): Students will submit a weekly reflection entry of no less than 200 words on a news story related to a social justice issue they found that week. Students must use reputable sources for the news story. What constitutes reputable sources will be reviewed in class. 3. Two exams (20 pts each):  two exams will be given during the term, midterm and final. The exams will be on class lectures and course materials. 4. Social justice class project (20 pts.): The class will work with the DEI program to hold an event for the campus to raise awareness on an identified social justice issue. Each student will be graded individually based upon their participation.
