WMS 2150 - PSYCHOLOGY OF WOMEN AND GENDER

Crosslisted/Same As: PSY 2150
PSY 2150 -WMS 2150. Will examine research in gender, intersectional feminist theory, the influence of sex and gender roles on the lived experience of individuals, and the unique aspects of the female experience. Topics will include sexual dimorphism, historical changes in gender, role identification, moral development, career systems, queerness and sexuality, parenting, data gaps around invisible women, aging and parenting, and the intersections of gender with psychological disorders. Objectives: A) Describe the ways that traditional research paradigms and data collection methods neglect women’s perspectives; B) Analyze published research with an understanding of unrecognized or unacknowledged gender biases; C) Design a psychology research project that demonstrates clear understanding of gender; D) Generate connections between one’s own experience and published research through writing self-reflections about the role of gender in one’s life experiences; E) Describe the experiences of other groups that experience inequities on the basis of age, sexual orientation, ethnicity, culture, and other variables; F) Critique the intersecting stigmas that drive stereotyped views of gender in popular media. Method of Instruction: Readings, lectures, discussions, films, and student research. Method of Evaluation: Essays on readings (three), quizzes on the text (six), class presentation, and a research project.
