SSC 3575 - POST-GRADUATION PLANNING ANDPREPARATION

This optional course is for juniors or seniors who are majoring or minoring in social and behavior science disciplines and considering a career in the field. Will focus on assessing career opportunities for undergraduate students and focus on graduate school and professional school options and preparation. All students will write a resume or CV, a personal statement, practice interviewing skills, and other activities directly related to obtaining entrance into a graduate school, professional school, or employment in the field. Objectives: A) Articulate the requirements for starting professional career in a social or behavioral science field with an undergraduate degree, graduate degree, or professional degree; B) Describe the procedures involved in taking pre-graduate or pre-professional exams and applying for admission to graduate or professional programs; C) Summarize their academic and professional experiences in the format of a (1) resume or curriculum vitae and (2) a personal statement, appropriate for application to a career, graduate program, or professional program in their field; D) Practice interviewing skills in a professional school, graduate school, or career setting. Method of Instruction: Class will be a seminar format focusing on the practical work of disciplinary career preparation, graduate school preparation, or professional school preparation and will employ discussion, group critiques, and presentations. Method of Evaluation: Participation will be assessed based on contribution to class discussions, as well as preparation for class as demonstrated by timely completion of all assignments.

Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior Standing and a Major or Minor in a Social or Behavioral Science. Note: Non-Majors or Minors may be Signed-in at the Professor’s Discretion. Students who have already taken SSC 3590 - JUNIOR SEMINAR IN SOCIAL&BEHAVIORALSCIENCES  may not enroll in this course.
