PSY 2990 - CURIOUS CASES IN THE HISTORYOF PSYCHOLOGY

Course will include a required field trip to the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology in Akron, Ohio in order to visit the National Museum of Psychology and conduct research in the Archives of the History of American Psychology. This course uses a case-study approach to explore the history of psychology as a science, profession, and agent of social change. Students will review famous research cases and landmark studies that changed the way psychologists view the human condition and how the public views the work of psychology. With a focus on fact-finding, the course provides a deeper dive into selected cases in order to better understand the experience of the subjects at the center of these studies, as well as the research climate and historical context surrounding them. TRIP INFO: Will include a three–day (two-night) field trip to the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio. Access to the Archives of the History of American Psychology is provided free of charge. There will be a course fee of approximately $100 to $200 to cover the cost of the field trip. Includes: Accommodations for two nights in a University of Akron dormitory or local hotel; Transportation via van; and Admission to the National Museum of Psychology, plus dinner, and attendance at the annual Ludy T. Benjamin Distinguished Lecture in the History of Psychology, hosted on the third Thursday of May. Objectives: A) Identify key areas of research and professional practice within psychology; B) Discuss famous cases and landmark studies in the field of psychology within a historical context; C) Critique certain cases using criteria pertinent to scientific methodology and ethical guidelines for human and animal research. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, presentations, and films. Method of Evaluation: Class participation 20%, class presentations (20%), museum review (20%), and archival research (40%). Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement. Course Fee: TBA, for field trip that will be out-of-town.

Prerequisite(s): No prerequisites. However, PSY 1010  is recommended.
