PSY 2970 - POLITICAL MOTIVES: PSY AND RATIONALPOL BEHAV credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: PSC 2970 PSC 2970 -PSY 2970. Will provide an introduction to a number of concepts from psychology that help us to understand political behavior. Topics include personality in politics, individual and group decision-making, the role of emotion in politics, and how psychological explanations can add deeper understanding to the concept of rational decision-making. Such topics will aid students in understanding a wide range of political behavior from media coverage of politics to campaign strategy. Objectives: A) Be able to distinguish between models of rational decision making and models based on psychological explanations of decision making; B) Express an understanding of decision processes in political settings, for individuals and groups; C) Will detail how the two approaches, together, aid in understanding of behavior in political settings; D) Will describe and explain the application of biases in political decisions; E) Will apply critical thinking to their study of human political behavior; F) Will demonstrate their knowledge through various forms of questioning and responding (Socratically, multiple choice, or essays). Method of Instruction: Lecture, assigned readings, class discussion, and video. Method of Evaluation: Student Journals, a term project, and participation (which takes into account not just the quantity of a student’s involvement, but the quality of it, as well as how the student conducts him-herself in the completion of the assigned tasks and is or is not disruptive of the classroom environment). Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
Prerequisite(s): PSC 1010 - INTRODUCTION TO POLITICS or PSY 1010 - INTRODUCTORY PSYCHOLOGY are recommended.
