PSY 2020 - INTRODUCTION TO CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

A survey of the problems, diagnostic instruments, ethics, and professional roles of clinical psychologists. Students will learn to describe and differentiate the theoretical perspectives and therapeutic techniques associated with the psychodynamic, behavioral, cognitive, humanistic, family and groups approaches to treatment. Discussions, demonstrations, and supervised experiences will provide opportunities to relate theoretical knowledge to skills demonstrated by professionals in the field. Objectives: A) Describe unique features of the field of clinical psychology, including how it differs from other mental health fields and the activities that are central to its practice; B) To discuss and evaluate the relationship of research and practice in clinical psychology; C) Review and discuss methods of clinical assessment and the diagnostic framework of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV-TR) of the American Psychiatric Association; D) Review concepts behind and techniques of selected psychotherapies; E) Learn the fundamentals of treatment planning; F) Discuss the future of clinical psychology. Method of Instruction: Lecture-discussion; films and videos; readings; practice of therapeutic techniques; and possible speakers. Method of Evaluation: A) Examinations (50%) Three in-class exams will allow students to demonstrate knowledge of course lecture and reading material; B) Intake Interviews (20%) Students will conduct a series of simulated clinical interviews over the course of the term. These interviews will gather information about the emotional, cognitive, behavioral, social, and occupational functioning of the interviewee. Based on one of these interviews, students will write an “intake report,” including a narrative summary; C) Term Paper (20%) Students will demonstrate their ability to build on the knowledge from this class by writing a eight to ten page paper about a topic related to this class that they select; D) Assignments, activities, and class participation (10%) In-class work will include brief course assignments and participation in class debates and presentations.
