NSG 4120 - NURSING CARE OF COMMUNITY CLIENTS


credits: 6.0
A clinical course which studies the community system’s adaptive abilities in health promotion, health maintenance, and health restoration. Particular emphasis is placed on a study of the role of the nurse as collaborator, change agent, and client advocate. The student will have the opportunity to assess internal and external discontinuities of a selected community and provide intervention. Case management within official agencies, as well as other community-based health programs, is introduced. The nursing process addresses the community as client. Objectives: A) Apply appropriate theories from nursing and other fields as a basis for clinical practice within the community; B) Utilize the nursing process to promote, maintain, and/or restore optimum health to the community and its people; C) Assess environmental, biophysical, and/or psychosocial strains - such as pollution, epidemics, and disasters that influence the health status of individuals, families, and the community; D) Organize the collection of meaningful data from within the chosen community and analyze these findings in relation to potential community health research; E) Analyze the impact of internal and external discontinuities-such as legal, economical, and political factors, which impinge upon health care behaviors of the community and its people; F) Examine effective emerging roles in community health nursing that promote the health and welfare of the community; G) Analyze ethical and legal issues pertinent to the community health environment; H) Demonstrate leadership in health promotion with the community I) Collaborate with consumers and colleagues to promote health with clients in the community setting; J) Demonstrate proficiency in the skills necessary to provide nursing care within the community health care setting. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, audiovisual materials, and guest speakers. Weekly clinical assignments in a variety of community settings. Method of Evaluation: Exams, community project, oral presentation, clinical performance, and clinical quizzes. Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.

Prerequisite(s): BIO 3000 - EPIDEMIOLOGY  and NSG 4009 - NURSING CARE OF FAMILY CLIENTS  and NSG 4011 - NURSING CARE OF PEDIATRIC CLIENTS
