NSG 4011 - NURSING CARE OF PEDIATRIC CLIENTS credits: 3.0 A clinical course focusing on the effects of developmental and situational discontinuities of pediatric clients. Growth and development concepts and care of the well and ill child are incorporated in the nursing process to promote health for this population. Genetics and genomics will be introduced and incorporated throughout the course. Objectives: Level Three Student Learning Outcomes. A) Apply theories as the basis for nursing practice relevant to family and systems; B) Adapt the nursing process in a variety of family and community settings with all age groups to assess health status and to assist with the promotion, restoration, and/or maintenance of optimal health for the client of any age; C) Evaluate research data for its applicability in the improvement of the quality of nursing care to the family and community client settings; D) Analyze knowledge and skills of information management and technology in nursing practice; E) Identify community and societal needs for health care in terms of the individual client system; F) Organize leadership activities by defining, implementing and evaluating nurse roles (i.e. leader and organizer) in the provision of care for family and the community as a client; G) Collaborate with colleagues and consumers to promote health and welfare of the family and community as a client; H) Analyze the expanded scope of responsibility and accountability for nursing practice in relation to family and community clients; I) Participate personal/professional development specific to the needs of family and/or community as a client. Learning Outcomes: A) Utilize evidence-based decision making and critical thinking to provide safe, quality nursing care of children and their families across the wellness/illness continuum in the community, primary care and acute care settings; B) Apply knowledge of pharmacology, pathophysiology, social determinants of health and technology when planning and providing care of infants, children, and adolescents experiencing alterations in health; C) Integrate knowledge of pediatric growth and development into the assessment, communication, teaching, and therapeutic interventions with children and their families; D) Demonstrate culturally competent nursing care to infants, children, and adolescents and their families; E) Incorporate research findings and professional standards when planning, providing and evaluating the nursing care of children and their families; F) Demonstrate the use of advocacy for children and their families while providing family centered care and identify community resources available to children and families; G) Identify the influences of Healthy People 2030 initiative on the health promotion and care of families with infants, children and adolescents. Method of Instruction: Teaching-learning strategies may include: interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration, self directed learning modules, simulations, written assignments, oral presentations, technological assisted learning with course base management system, campus laboratory practice, and clinical practice. Method of Evaluation: Must pass a clinical calculation quiz, clinical evaluations will be considered, exams and quizzes, weighted exam grade average, and a pharmacology-clinical calculation test.
