NSG 3900 - NRSING CARE OF MENTL HEALTH CLIENTS credits: 3.0 NOTE: 3.0 credits is for the Lecture and the 0 credit is for the Clinic Sections. A clinical nursing course that implements the nursing process in caring for clients experiencing psychiatric- mental health discontinuity. Concepts of psychiatric nursing will be framed in terms of systems theory and the transitional process. An overview of various treatment modalities will be complemented by clinical experiences in the inpatient and-or community setting involving clients on different levels of the health-illness continuum. Specific interventions will be directed toward the three levels of prevention. Objectives: A) Apply appropriate theories from nursing and other fields in the study of psychiatric-mental health nursing; B) Utilize the nursing process to assess health status and to plan, prioritize and implement activities for the optimum mental health of client systems; C) Identify stages of the nurse-client relationship; D) Examine the position of the health-illness continuum of individuals who experience a psychological disorder; E) Identify the impact of internal and external discontinuities that affect mental health for clients and self; F) Implement activities that support constructive changes in methods of coping with actual or potential mental health stressors: G) Apply research relevant to the care of the individual client system as part of the nursing process; H) Employ the leadership process within the framework of the nurse-client relationship I) Identify needed changes in the health care of individuals and their families through coordination with colleagues; J) Demonstrate ethical and legal accountability for the nursing care provided; K) Demonstrate proficiency in skills necessary to provide care for clients in a variety of psychiatric-mental health care environments. Method of Instruction: Teaching-learning strategies may include: interactive lecture, discussion, demonstration, self-directed learning modules, simulations, written assignments, technological assisted learning with course base management system, and clinical practice. Method of Evaluation: Exams, assignments, and clinical experiences.
