MKT 3915 - ENTERTAINMENT, MEDIA, AND SPORTS MARKETING: AN EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

MKT 3915-SPM 3915 . There are several field trips planned, class meeting times may vary. Students will examine the best marketing practices and leading marketing strategies utilized in the entertainment, arts, media, and sports industries. Through a series of real-life case studies, experiential learning experiences and interactive lectures involving experts in the industries, the student will achieve a better understanding of the marketing practices and strategies of these industries, to better prepare students for a possible professional career in one of these fields. Objectives: A) Describe the basics of entertainment, media, and sports marketing; B) Describe the marketing mix elements involved in entertainment, media, and sport events, e.g. product, pricing, place, and promotion; C) Explain the opportunities and challenges with regards to branding of persons, teams, events/venues; D) Describe and to use the changing technologies in particular digital, social, and multi-media platforms, which are, used to market sports and entertainment, together with newer online distribution channels; E) Explain the importance of relationship management and reputation management issues; F) Synthesize the market performance metrics that are essential in these industries; G) Present the basic elements of a strategic marketing game plan to hit a blockbuster or home run with your fans and customers. Method of Instruction: Lectures and class discussion, guest speakers, assigned readings and cases, field trips, and in-the-field ‘hands on’ experiences/project based learning. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes (30%), assignments, cases and blog (30%), and an experiential Learning project/portfolio* (40%). Each assignment will be graded according to a predetermined rubric.
