MGT 3960 - WORKPLACE DISPUTE RESOLUTION credits: 3.0 This course will explore the reasons for workplace conflict and compare the types of dispute resolution procedures that are used in both the union and non-union workplaces. In addition, another portion of the course will be dedicated to comparing the use of transferable dispute resolution skills, such as those facilitated by neutrals in Conciliatory Processes (Mediations, Conciliations, Fact-Findings, and Arbitrations). Will also include a focus on communication and negotiating skills that are beneficial regardless of major or career path. Dispute resolution skills are also beneficial in our everyday lives where disagreements may range from selecting a place to go to dinner, to more serious interpersonal conflicts. Objectives: A) Explain the various types of conflicts in each type of workplace setting, including relevant laws and regulations; B) Compare workplace dispute resolution systems; C) Identify how workplace dispute resolution is utilized facilitate settlement and increase job productivity; D) Identify, recognize and resolve impasses in the workplace; E) Negotiate using the process of preparation, bargaining, settlement and evaluation. Method of Instruction: Lecture, classroom work, group presentations, research, and homework assignments. Method of Evaluation: Course Engagement- Reaction papers, book report, and class attendance and participation 20%; Exam - on the text ADR in a Nutshell 20%; Learning Log- lessons learned from in-class negotiation exercises 10%; Mediation and Fact-Finding Exercise 20%; Baseball Arbitration 20%; ADR Policy and Procedure Development 10%.
