HMS 2630 - INTEGRATIVE WELLNESS AND WELL-BEING

HMS-PSY. This course explores the models of health and mental health promotion in communities. An examination of the relationships between immediate health/mental health problems and deeper causes of physical diseases and mental health issues may help students understand more about integrative strategies to prevent physical and psychological issues of living. An analysis of theories between mechanistic and alternative views may advance an understanding of the objective emphasis on individualized health and mental health promotion plans in communities. A comparison in practice between reductionist-oriented and holistic strategies used in communities may foster the development of healthy behaviors and skills for effective self-care integrating body, mind, and spirit. Students will review important components of integrative care for physical and mental health through examining literature of evidence-based and other pragmatic research model and acquire the relevant information on cultural practice through experiential learning (e.g., Cupping in Traditional Chinese Medicine). The goal of this course is to draw on varied resources and cultural practice in relevant fields such as psychology, medicine, philosophy, history, and environmental science to understand the ways of thinking pertaining to personal growth and master practical skills in enhancing self-healing and individual well-being. Objectives: A) Identify the models of health and mental health promotion in communities from global perspectives; B) Discuss the relationships between immediate health/mental health problem(s) and deeper causes of physical diseases and mental health issues involving interdisciplinary evidence; C) Describe the connections between human behavior and integrative approaches to enhancing self-care and self-healing through culture-based framework; D) Critique pros and cons of both data-driven strategies and culture-based holistic healing traditions fostering wellness and well-being promotion in communities. Method of Instruction: Taught mainly in the lecture and seminar format, students will be expected to read assigned chapters from the textbook and supplemental readings prior to class, and come prepared to discuss key issues. Lectures and seminars will be supplemented by experiential learning, as well as student presentations. Guest lectures will be scheduled for the related topics. Method of Evaluation: Grades will be based on performance on quizzes and experiential learnig assessment 20%; three exams 20%; a class presentation 20%; a paper 20%; and quality contribution to class discussions 20%. Grading rubric for each assignment will be provided. Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.

Prerequisite(s): ANT 1040  or PSY 1010  is recommended.
