HLS 2920 - HEALTH PERSPECTIVES ON VULNERABLE POPULATIONS credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: HMS 2920 Crosslisted/Same As (2): NSG 2920 HLS 2920-HMS 2920 -NSG 2920 . Requirement in the Medical Humanities minor and features an exploration of global health and wellness needs of vulnerable populations. Emphasis is placed upon local (regional), national, and global issues as they relate to the World Health Organization’s social determinants of health. Will focus on health indicators of global health and wellness of vulnerable and underserved populations, will explore concepts of health, society, client environments, physiologic, and social justice considerations from various cultural perspectives. Will compare health disparities and the burden of disease using a systematic multidisciplinary approach through field observation, data collection, and analysis based upon the identified persistent identifiers of vulnerable populations during a walking survey: health risk, chronic disease states, and access to care. Objectives: A) Utilize a theoretical framework and research in guiding health practices with vulnerable populations in a global health perspective; B) Compare and contrast a selected global health issue of a vulnerable population from a regional, national and international perspective; C) Identify the health-risk (barriers) and health promotion needs (resources) of a vulnerable population as they impact upon individual and aggregate health state; D) Discuss the importance of social justice and the cost in meeting the healthcare needs and concerns of vulnerable populations nationally and globally, and the impact upon future generations; E) Identify evidence-based strategies aimed at decreasing disparities of vulnerable populations on local (regional), national, and global levels. Method of Instruction: Readings, Windshield Survey Tool, Papers, and Field Notes. Method of Evaluation: Assigned readings with (four) quizzes, 10%; Windshield Survey Tool, 20%; Topic paper on Global Health needs of assigned population, 40%; Power-point presentation of topic, 15%; Walking survey field notes with objective findings and reflections, 15%. Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.
