HCM 3300 - LEADERSHIP IN HEALTHCARE MANAGEMENT


credits: 3.0
Will focus on the development of healthcare leadership skills and competencies within the health care system that facilitate quality, patient-centered, efficient, and cost-effective health care. Will integrate application of leadership theories and organizational models to complex professional and systems. Emphasis is placed on exploring the role and function of the healthcare leader from a systems perspective, concentrating on the development of skills required to deliver health care that meets the current and future needs of the institution and populations. Challenges confronting healthcare leaders including teamwork collaboration, and leadership succession planning for organizational and professional sustainability will be explored. Will prepare students for leadership roles as critical participants in healthcare decisions to effectively facilitate change in shaping the future of healthcare delivery. Objectives: A) Summarize leadership models/theories and evaluate the evidence to support them; B) Evaluate appropriate teamwork models and critically analyze the potential of these models to improve interdisciplinary collaboration/communication and patient outcomes; C) Employ leadership skills with inter-professional teams to create change in healthcare and complex healthcare delivery systems; D) Explain the role of the healthcare leader in succession planning; E) Identify and apply key strategies in healthcare coaching and mentoring in order to enhance patient outcomes. Method of Instruction: Lecture, classroom discussion, simulation, and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: Assignments, 20 %; Exams, 30%; Case studies, 20%; and Course project/presentation, 30 %.
