HCM 3250 - QUALITY IMPROVEMENT IN HEALTHCAREMANAGEMENT credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: MGT 3250 HCM 3250-MGT 3250 . A comprehensive knowledge of quality improvement in healthcare settings in order to learn to incorporate quality improvement processes to prevent failure and improve quality for a High Reliability Organization. Students will learn the key concepts of identifying and using data to prioritize opportunity and measure impact, setting goals based on evidence or best practice, and creating changes that result in improved care or service that are sustainable over time. The final term project for this course is the development and presentation of a Healthcare Quality Improvement Toolkit. Objectives: A) Describe the foundations of healthcare quality and science underlying patient safety and quality improvement; B) Apply quality improvement methods to a healthcare gap in quality; C) Identify system failures and medical errors in health systems; D) Analyze patient safety problems and processing using quality improvement tools. Method of Instruction: Lecture, classroom discussion, simulation, and guest speakers. Method of Evaluation: Assignments, 20 %; Exams, 30%; Simulation case studies, 20%; and Course project/presentation, 30 %.
