HCM 3200 - HEALTHCARE LAW AND REGULATION credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: LAW 3200 HCM 3200-LAW 3200 . Will examine the main features of the legal and regulatory environment of health care in the United States. Providers of care, health care products and services, the relationship between health and health care, private and public insurance and related financing mechanisms, health care reform, factors affecting health policy, and the impact of health policy on key stakeholders will be covered. Class will pay close attention to the economic incentives facing institutions and individuals and to the economic context of important health policy issues. Objectives: A) Explain the history and current state of healthcare regulation in the U.S.; B) Analyze HIPAA regulations and compliance requirements; C) Draw the distinction between private and public healthcare providers, and describe how to comply with relevant laws and regulations for each; D) Outline the differences between University (or teaching) hospitals and other hospitals, with respect to the laws and regulations applying to each; E) Explain the way malpractice insurance works, including liability issues and common malpractice cases. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion, Reading assignments, and Term project, case analysis. Method of Evaluation: Four papers 40%, Term project-presentation 30%, and Final Exam 30%.
