FSH 3800 - FASHION FABRIC AND FORECASTING

FSH 3800-MER 3800 -MGT 3800 . Success in fashion merchandising revolves around an understanding of cultures, lifestyles and consumer behavior, and how they intersect with the colors, textiles and styles used in fashion products. This course examines how fashion professionals leverage trends, forecasting and knowledge of the textile industry to create successful and profitable products. This will be a hands-on course incorporating experiential learning strategies including case studies, guest speakers and real-world examples from industry, to provide students with exposure to production merchandising issues in the fashion industry. Objectives: This course aims to give students a hands-on grounding in planning, forecasting and their impact on product development, using actual case examples and current information gathered directly from the industry: A) To describe consumer trends, lifestyle and culture issues impacting the design and development of fashion products; B) To apply planning and forecasting tools in the analysis of new fashion products; C) To explain the role of textiles, colors and styles in the new product creation process; D) To analyze market performance based on industry metrics; E) To create planning and forecasting examples based on case studies. Method of Instruction: Lectures and class discussion, guest speakers, assigned readings and cases, field trips, and in-the-field hands on experiences / project based learning. Method of Evaluation: Assignments: Case studies, 30%; Exams / Quizzes, 20%; Group Facilitator, 20%; and Experiential Learning Project / Portfolio, 30%.
