EDU 3940 - DECOLONIZING AND INDIGENOUS ED credits: 6.0 Will examine and critique the impact of European settler colonialist education on Indigenous peoples in the global context, specifically in relation to land, sovereignty, and Indigenous knowledge systems worldwide. Students will investigate, create, and apply Indigenous/decolonizing curriculum and instruction theory and strategies such as Critical Indigenous Pedagogy. Students will be placed as student teachers in schools that serve Indigenous schools. Will be expected to: analyze settler colonialist education’s impact on Indigenous peoples, create critical Indigenous curriculum and instruct students through critical Indigenous pedagogies. Objectives: A) Analyze the impact of settler colonialist education on Indigenous peoples globally; B) Investigate Indigenous and decolonizing curriculum and instruction theory; C) Describe Indigenous philosophies of education; D) Create critical Indigenous curriculum; E) Engage critical Indigenous pedagogy within Indigenous schools. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, community visits, school visits, and travel. Method of Evaluation: Reflection papers, philosophy of education, lesson plans, teaching observations, student journal, and oral presentations. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
Prerequisite(s): SIGNATURE REQUIRED and EDU 3350 - HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT AM EDUCATION FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE (or) SSC 3350 - HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT AM EDUCATION FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE .
