SSC 3350 - HISTORICAL AND CONTEMPORARY CONTEXT AM EDUCATION FOR INDIGENOUS PEOPLE credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: EDU 3350 EDU 3350 -SSC 3350.Will explore the major historical influences on the contemporary context of education for Indigenous peoples in the United States. The major themes to be investigated include: policies for Indigenous peoples in the United States; goals and theories for education; and practices of schools. Autobiographies and historical narratives will be utilized to examine how the aforementioned themes manifested in the lives of Indigenous students during three significant time periods. The three time periods include the eras of missionary domination, federal government domination, and Indigenous self-determination. Additionally, critical Indigenous theories will be used to interpret the autobiographical accounts of the Indigenous students from the three time periods. The students of the course will position themselves within this exploration through their own autobiographical accounts and participation in projects based in Indigenous communities. Some travel to communities will be required. Objectives: A) Describe how specific U.S. policies affected education for Indigenous peoples; B) Explain how the goals and theories of education for Indigenous peoples manifested in the lives of the students for three major time periods; C) Explain the contemporary context of education for Indigenous students through an explanation of how education for Indigenous peoples has changed and stayed the same throughout three major time periods; D) Analyze and interpret the historical experiences of Indigenous students through critical Indigenous theories; E) Communicate effectively an historical narrative of their family’s experiences with education for Indigenous peoples in the United States. Method of Instruction: Classroom lecture, discussion, videos, speakers, and community-based learning experiences (service learning projects). Method of Evaluation: Autobiographies, community projects, and written assignments. Meets *NWP Distribution Requirement. TRAVEL FEES WILL BE APPLIED WILL TRAVEL TO UPSTATE NY.
