CSD 2920 - ETHICS FOR SPEECH LANGUAGEPATHOLOGISTS AND AUDIOLOGISTS

Will introduce students to ethics and ethical decision making for Speech Language Pathologists and Audiologists through discussion and case studies. Students will become familiar with the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA) Code of Ethics and will learn several different concepts related to ethics in clinical practice and in research. Through case studies of current issues facing the Board of Ethics, students will examine ethical considerations and learn to differentiate between ethical, moral, and legal issues and decision making. Objectives: A) Describe the difference between ethics, morals, and legality; B) Comprehensively explain the contents of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association Code of Ethics document; C) Outline the components of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association Scope of Practice for Speech Language Pathology; D) Outline the components of the American Speech-Language Hearing Association Scope of Practice for Audiology; E) Apply the American Speech-Language Hearing Association (ASHA) code of ethics to various cases; F) Describe the statutes and regulations from the State of New York Education Department Office of the Professions and apply those statutes and regulations to case studies; G) Express a cogent and well-organized opinion on ethical dilemmas and support that opinion from extant documentation; H) Recognize and discuss ethical dilemmas related to research; I) Describe the function of an Institutional Review Board (IRB). Method of Instruction: Will utilize interactive classroom lecture, think-pair-share, formalized genial and professional debate, critical analysis and decision-making activities, and other flipped-classroom techniques. Method of Evaluation: Based upon performance on various assignments and examinations (see attached syllabus for further details). The course has a diverse array of assignment types in order to play to a variety of strengths.
