ARH 3125 - ROMAN ART credits: 3.0 ARH 2125 and ARH 3125. An in-depth study of the architecture, painting, sculpture, and minor arts of Ancient Rome and the Roman Empire from the eighth century B.C. to the fifth century A.D. The course emphasizes the social, political religious and geographical influences on the arts and artifacts of the Roman world and their corresponding influences on the art and architecture of the later periods. Objectives: A) Students will analyze and interpret Roman art within the historical/political/religious/geographical context of the Roman World; B) Identify and interpret various art works through the use of slides; C) To examine the similarities and differences as well as the development of various art forms through time and by geographical area; D) To study the influence of Roman art and architecture on later periods. Method of Instruction: Informal presentations and class discussions. Students must present their research paper with a PowerPoint presentation. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes, midterm exam, final exam and research paper. Research paper/MS PowerPoint (25%). The research paper will be due in three stages: outline/bibliography, draft, second draft (optional), final version. The grade will be lowered by a full grade point if not handed in on time. ARH 3125 only Meets the *WRT Distribution Requirement.
