EDU 3351 - ASSESSING STUDENTS WITH DISABLITIES CH SP. ED.

Pre-service teacher candidates learn and apply skills in developing, implementing, and interpreting alternative and adaptive assessment techniques and strategies for students with disabilities in grades one through six. Emphasis is placed on portfolio, authentic, curriculum-based, and standardized assessments for all students with disabilities, including students with autism. Candidates carefully select appropriate formal and informal testing materials to assess, diagnose, and correct learning problems. Additionally, candidates explore uses of assistive technologies to assess and support all diverse learners. Objectives: A) Examine legal provisions in current federal and state regulations and guidelines regarding assessment; B) Apply learning theories to strategies and practices of assessing students with disabilities in grades one through six; C) Apply knowledge of basic assessment concepts, including testing and test construction; D) Examine informative methods of assessment; E) Analyze alternative and adaptive assessment approaches for all students with disabilities in grades one through six; F) Determine appropriate uses and limitations of various assessment tools for all students with disabilities; G) Develop an educational plan for various types of disabilities; H) Apply skills in developing, implementing, and interpreting informative assessment techniques for all students with disabilities; I) Demonstrate the ability to communicate assessment information and testing procedures to parents, staff, and students; J) Examine which technologies and assessment tools are appropriate for screening, pre-referral, referral, identification, and classification for all students with disabilities; K) Use assistive technologies to assess the academic performance of students with various disabilities. Method of Instruction: Lecture, class discussion, group collaborations, and student presentations. Method of Evaluation: Class Participation and Discussion 10%; Assistive Technology Presentation - 15%; Written Assignments - 40%; Midterm Examination - 15%;and Final Examination - 20%.
