SWK 4021 - FIELD SEMINAR II credits: 1.0 This course is the second of two courses taken concurrently during senior social work students’ field experience. This course will focus on processing the field experience while connecting previous program content to the field experience. This course is the second of two field seminars that are designed to complement the field experience and must be taken concurrently with field experience II. This course will focus on connection of program content to the field experience with special emphasis on development of professional skills, working consistent with the NASW Code of Ethics standards, and development of self-care to address burnout in the field. Objectives: A) Develop and implement evidenced based treatment planning for client systems; B) Understand the importance of collaboration with service providers for appropriate service delivery; C) Effective use of evaluation tools to determine effectiveness of interventions; D) Understand the role of professional boundaries in the helping relationship; E) Demonstrate an understanding of when and how to terminate the helping relationship; F) Recognize child abuse and maltreatment as mandated reporters; G) Understand the impact of vicarious traumatization and compassion fatigue as it contributes to burnout. Method of Instruction: Will include lectures, group discussions, case studies, field trips, and guest speakers. Students will actively engage in organization and development activities with campus partners. Method of Evaluation: 1. Participation and Attendance (20 pts): Active engagement in class discussions, group activities, and attendance; 2. Weekly reflection (12 x 5 pts each=60 pts.): Students will submit a weekly reflection entry of no less than 200 words on a news story related to a social justice issue they found that week. Students must use reputable sources for the news story. What constitutes reputable sources will be reviewed in class; 3. Simulation (50 pts): Students will conduct a 45-60-minute session with a client that will include: assessment, treatment planning, implementation, evaluation, and termination. This shall be recorded in the simulation lab, edited to demonstrate breaks between components with another student acting as the client. Students must be dressed in a professional manner consistent with the work setting.
Prerequisite(s): Senior status and must be taken with Field Experience II, SWK 4020 . Co-Requisite(s): SWK 4020 .
