ESL 1010 - ACADEMIC LISTENING AND SPEAKING credits: 1.5 This course is designed to help incoming non-native English speaking students at EC become more confident in listening and speaking in the college classroom. Students will have the opportunity to practice their English listening skills by responding to a variety of short lectures, podcasts, and/or film clips in class. To improve comprehension skills, we will review note-taking strategies for ELL students and focus on vocabulary development including the use of slang and idioms in spoken language. Will also review speaking strategies for the American college classroom including expressing an opinion, agreeing/disagreeing, and question-asking and answering skills. In addition to informal group discussions, students will also have the opportunity to engage in more formal speaking activities including both group and individual oral presentations. This is a required course for non-native English-speaking undergraduate students who do not present with a TOEFL score of 100 or more and will be open to non-native English graduate students on a voluntary basis.
Objectives: A) Improve listening comprehension skills; B) Explore strategies for communicating effectively in the college classroom; C) Develop student skills and experience in formal speaking situations Improve pronunciation skills by reviewing common errors; D) Practice stress and intonation in different settings.
