FIN 2900 - NEW YORK CITY: FINANCIAL CAPITAL OF THE WORLD credits: 6.0 In this Spring Term travel course to New York City, students will move beyond financial theory and learn directly from experienced financial professionals on the daily challenges of the profession. Students will gain exposure to the different fields within Finance including investment banking, investment research, asset allocation, sales and trading, operations and ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) investing. In addition, students will tour major financial institutions such as the Federal Reserve Bank. Each student will cover a particular finance sector or institution and deliver a presentation in addition to write a final paper on their insights gained. Objectives: A) Describe and discuss the role of financial markets and institutions; B) Describe the different sectors within finance and opportunities for finance professionals; C) Define and describe debt security markets, equity markets and derivative markets; D) Explain market offerings including private and public equity; E) Discuss market transactions and how they are executed; F) Understand Describe and discuss the impact of monetary policy on financial markets; G) Describe regulation for financial institutions and markets; H) Analyze risk in financial markets and at financial institutions. Method of Instruction: In-class lectures, followed by ten days of visiting financial institutions in NYC with Q&A sessions with professional experience to gain exposure to industry practice and standards. Method of Evaluation: 25% In-class presentation on specified topic pre-travel; 25% In-class discussions from class readings including the Wall Street Journal; 25% full participation in travel component including discussing financial markets and the role of institutions within the industry professional; 25% final paper summarizing lesson learned from the class trip.
