CHE 1930 - WITCHCRAFT AND POTIONS

This course covers the historical, political, and scientific aspects of witchcraft. In lecture, will focus on the legends behind witches, witchcrafts involvement in the history of many regions, the prolific Salem witch trials, and witchcraft in the media and modern-day witchcraft implementations. Will include a trip to Salem, MA to investigate the rich history of the area and experience the location of the famous witch trials first-hand. In lab, will explore the scientific side of a witch’s potion by preforming a number of experiments studying oils, crystals, and other topics. Will also discuss the chemical backbone of these experiments at their fundamental levels and truly grasp the connections between chemistry and witches. Objectives: A) Analyze historical writings and literature; B) Evaluate the relationship between the historical events and politics; C) Create a clear and concise research paper using credible resources; D) Present research obtained from credible historic resources; E) Examine modern day interpretations of witchcraft in media and religions; F) Construct, evaluate and employ laboratory protocols; G) Evaluate and present experimental findings. Method of Instruction: Lecture and Laboratory (3:1). Method of Evaluation: Research Project (Salem Witch Trials); Discussion (assigned online and required after each course); Short Writing Responses (connected to short readings and videos); Final Project (Witchcraft in US Regions). Field Trip Fee: $500.00.
