ENG 2180 - EXPOSITORY WRITING credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: FAR 2180 ENG 2180-FAR 2180 . This is an advanced composition course designed to explore a variety of non-fiction prose. The collection of non-fiction genres (academic essays, magazine articles, feature articles, letters to the editor, op-ed pieces for newspapers, blogs) is important when we consider how we use writing to inform, communicate ideas, or argue for specific ideas or positions. We often want others not only to know what we are thinking but also to be persuaded that our thinking is best! With the proliferation of electronic media, in fact, the dominance of non-fiction/expository prose has become even clearer: if anything, today’s world requires a high level of literacy (meaning both reading and writing). We will use our time during the term to delve into a variety of forms and to consider how the writing process itself can be tuned to assure a stronger and more authentic writing voice. Objectives: This course will refine and develop students’ writing skills and foster an increased awareness of language, thought, and the complexities found in writing for magazines. Method of Instruction: Group discussions, workshops and critique. Method of Evaluation: In and out of class assignments, workshop participation and weekly essays.
