WMS 2970 - SEXUAL IDENTITY AND SOCIETY credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: SOC 2970 SOC 2970 -WMS 2970. Will examine how sexual identity has been socially constructed. We start with a history of sexuality and look at how modern queer identities have been formed. Will talk about issues such as gay families, the fight against discrimination, and the struggle for civil rights for gays, lesbians, and trans-gendered people. Will have a special focus on contested cultural representations of queerness in Western culture. Objectives: A) To be able to trace the history of ideas about sexual identities in Western culture from Ancient Greece until today; B) To assess competing theories about how sexual identity is shaped; C) To express an understanding of how gender is related to sexuality in the process of the social construction of sexuality; D) Students will critically assess issues affecting the gay, lesbian, and trans-gender communities; E) Students will critically assess the competing cultural representations of queerness in Western culture. Method of Evaluation: Reaction papers (20%); class discussion (10%); exams (40%); final research paper (30%). Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
