credits: 3.0
Crosslisted/Same As: PSC 2920
PSC 2920 -WMS 2920. Will examine the role of women in contemporary American Politics. Certainly, no such examination can take place without first taking a look at a brief history of the women’s movement and the winning of the right to vote, in particular. Political scientists have noted major differences in many behaviors between men and women (e.g., party affiliation, voter turnout, decisions to seek office, and so forth) and will attempt to review them. In addition, will examine what issues are of salience to women and how women from different ideological and partisan perspectives view those issues. Will attempt to answer key questions about the role of women in recent campaigns and look to the implications of recent elections for the role of women in politics. In particular, we will examine the treatment of women in politics by the news media. Objectives: A) Know the basic history of the women’s suffrage movement; B) Recognize sexism in politics, whether in the practice of politics or the coverage of it by the news media; C) Be able to recognize issues of importance to women and understand why those issues are important; D) Recognize differences in behavior in politics that have some basis in gender and understand why the differences may be based on gender; E) Identify differences in style and approaches to politics that may be gender based. Method of Instruction: Lecture and class discussion. Method of Evaluation: Student Journals, a term project, and participation (which takes into account not just the quantity of a student’s involvement, but the quality of it as well as how the student conducts him-herself in the completion of the assigned tasks and is or is not disruptive of the classroom environment). Meets *WEP Distribution Requirements.
