SSC 2100 - GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL ISSUES

credits: 3.0
This course follows a case-study approach to exploring environmental issues that-like the air we breathe and the water we drink-do not respect national borders. We will consider the ways in which different local, regional, and national interests shape the response to environmental issues, the political and managerial challenges posed by global environmental issues, the history of international efforts to resolve environmental issues, and the tensions between developed and developing nations relating to environmental policy. Central to the course will be a consideration of how the long history of interactions among cultures has both affected and been affected by the environment. Topics will be drawn from: fisheries depletion; food security; atmospheric ozone depletion and CFC regulation; endangered species protection; deforestation; energy use; water use; climate change. Objectives: A) Identify and explain significant global environmental issues; B) Compare and differentiate environmental issues as reflections of competing local, regional, and national interests; C) Identify and explain the national and international mechanisms for regulating environmental issues; D) Evaluate selected international environmental policies. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion. Method of Evaluation: Class presentations, unit tests (five to six), and final project. Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.
