SSC 1940 - THE NATURAL AND SOCIAL HISTORY OFIRELAND credits: 6.0 A non-technical introduction to the natural history and culture of Ireland. We will read about and then observe several of the geological features of the island. The flora and fauna of Ireland will be compared to that of Europe and the United States. Historical events that have shaped modern Ireland will be discussed and the sites of some of these events will be visited. The Irish political system, the relationship between Ireland and Northern Ireland, and the continued changes taking place in Irish culture will be discussed. Objectives: A) Identified major geological features of Ireland; B) Compared flora and fauna of Ireland with that found in other parts of Europe and the USA; C) Described the broad picture of the history and culture of Ireland and analyzed the effect of that history and culture on modern Ireland; D) Evaluated the different perspectives of the population with regard to the physical environment in which they live; E) Demonstrate a basic understanding of the parties involved in the political situation in Northern Ireland; F) Evaluated conflicting sources of information obtained while traveling; G) Identified components of the relationship between Ireland and the United States; H) Developed a paper project on a topic of approved choosing related to Ireland; I) Experienced modern Ireland culture; J) Constructed your own memorable adventures. Method of Instruction: Lectures and class discussions during the first week of the term. Travel to Ireland for three weeks to visit various sites. Discussion of what we have seen during the final week back on campus. Preparation of posters on a specific aspect of Ireland’s natural or social history. Method of Evaluation: Quiz at the end of the first week to ensure that all participants are prepared for the visit to Ireland; Participation when we are in Ireland; Students will write a journal of their daily activities while we are in Ireland; Each student or group of students will report, probably in a poster format, on a particular aspect of what we observed in Ireland. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
